Code of Conduct

Principles and Commitment

Manifesta 16 Ruhr gGmbH (hereafter “Manifesta 16”) seeks to reshape the relationship between culture and society by investigating and catalysing positive social change in Europe through art, architecture and urbanism, in continuous dialogue with the communities of the Ruhr area.

Manifesta 16 stands for diversity, tolerance, open exchange, mutual respect and inclusivity in a democratic and liberal society. Manifesta 16 is committed to creating a safe and reliable environment where all individuals are treated equally and with respect — regardless of background, origin, beliefs, gender, religion, age, level of education, sexual identity or orientation, or physical ability, as protected under the German General Act on Equal Treatment (AGG).

Manifesta 16 fosters a collaborative, respectful, supportive and harassment-free environment. All staff, partners, participants, visitors, guests and collaborators are expected to treat one another in a friendly and respectful manner, and individual boundaries must be respected at all times across all biennial spaces.

Manifesta 16 does not tolerate sexism, racism, antisemitism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia, queerphobia, classism, or any other form of discriminatory behaviour. Sexual harassment, bullying, abuse of power and verbal, physical, written or online abuse including threats, insults or derogatory language are strictly prohibited.

Manifesta 16 is committed to providing the highest possible protection against these forms of unacceptable behaviour, ensuring that everyone always feels as safe and comfortable as possible. All reported cases of discrimination or unacceptable behaviour will be investigated, and consistent action will be taken.

Scope

This Code of Conduct applies to all Manifesta representatives and staff, regardless of position or type of contract, including members of the Supervisory Board and the Artistic Board, as well as to participants, contractors, volunteers, professional guests and visitors. We will make our commitment to equality clear in our working with supporters and donors.

The Code applies to all forms of interaction, expression, action and communication, including those that take place online, and it sets the required standards of individual and professional conduct within the Manifesta 16 community.
